How the Lungs Work

To understand more about NSCLC, it's helpful to know how your lungs work. The lungs are 2 sponge-like, cone-shaped breathing organs found in your chest. The lungs bring oxygen into your body as you breathe in and remove carbon dioxide (a waste product) as you breathe out. The right lung has 3 lobes (sections), and the left lung has 2 (due to the heart taking up more room on that side of the body). The protective lining around the lungs is called the pleura, which allows the lungs to move during breathing. Air is brought down the lungs through the trachea (windpipe), which is divided into tubes called bronchi (each tube separately is called the bronchus). The bronchi then divide into smaller branches called bronchioles. At the end of the bronchioles are tiny air sacs known as alveoli.
